Snails and slugs in Witrivier South Africa

I found exploring my garden at night night very interesting its March 2015 I live in Witrivier South Africa. Just after 9pm due to the cold and misty climate of the lowveld one will start finding snails all shapes and sizes . I found a few species in my garden. This one snail or slug is dark brown very big and the other one almost black.

When danger is near it will curl up and look like a rock covered with dirt .Then it takes its time stretching out but once it is in a straight
line it is very fast. It lives under ground and in a few seconds will disappear .

If one touch it it will become hard like a rock ,curl up and pretend its a rock .Then count to 10 and it will slowly stretch out again .When not threaten its soft and shiny . When in danger becomes hard and dull very interesting to watch.

Snails have a long life between 5 to 25 years if not killed or stepped on specially this species. They look like leaves or rocks some move on plants un notice.
When snails move around on leaves ground and plants they leave behind mucus that acts as a lubricant that allow them to move without friction up and down .Its a myth that mucus of snails will make you sick. A snail moves 1.3 cm per second .Snails have the reproductive organs of males and female

s.But can’t create little snails on their own.They must mate then lay eggs to keep the family growing.

Believe me snails can’t see some of them have  two sets of tentacles upper ones is the eyes the lower ones the organs. Remember snails can’t hear . They are nocturnal so most of their movement  takes place at night.
They hate sunlight will find them hiding in day time or underground or other species prefer under leaves or were it is shady. When rainy or cloudy its the best time to go snail hunting.
Salt will kill snails instantly.They feed on plants is very strong it can lift up 10 times its own weight in a vertical position.There are 200,000 species of mollusks out there including snails only 50,000 have been identified.

I saw this butterfly in a flower very early in the morning on my morning walk in nature in the bush were I used to stay the sun just came up . With the naked eye very hard to spot look at the last picture .

I only had a few seconds to take this picture and off it goes into the field . I took this photos near the Kruger national airport in Plaston in South Africa.

It’s never to late

Bush browns

In South Africa in Witrivier near the Kruger park its March 2015 and although cold at night some night can still be warm to .When one walking in day time or just relaxing outside enjoying the warm touch of the sun on ones skin or watching butterflies ,moths and birds  and insects one will become one with nature. For me I will lay on the grass looking at the clouds then I will close my eyes take a deep breath inhaling the clean air . 

Just thinking and praying saying thank you to my Heavenly Father because we are here on his grace At 44 years of age I am thank full I got more that I deserve.  I used to go to bed hungry before I met my husband .We struggled till a few years ago.

Now I take life one day at a time sometimes feel guilty that I can’t help more people who are struggling.

Rivers ones was dry.
Now more
It’s raining hard
Rivers getting full
Once was dry no it overflows
Earth is smiling again
Food for all water for everyone
No more birds dying of hunger
Life can be cruel
Life can be kind
All depends
Of the heavens above
Humans have no control
Lost it long time ago
